Rurikovo Gorodishche

Rurikovo Gorodishche is an archaeological monument of the IX century, located in Veliky Novgorod, namely – 2 km south of the city center, at the source of the Volkhov River from Lake Ilmen, opposite the Yuriev Monastery. The mound was a trade and craft and military-administrative center of Priilmeny. This place is also known as the residence of the Novgorod princes, with which many names of famous political figures of Ancient Russia are connected. Here are the ruins of the Church of the Annunciation, the second stone building after St. Sophia Cathedral, which was laid by Prince Mstislav, son of Vladimir Monomakh.
