Rostov Kremlin is a majestic stone fortification in the ancient city of Rostov Veliky. The territory of the Kremlin is located in the historical center, on a small hill, near the northwestern tip of Lake Nero. It is very beautiful and has long been a visiting card of the ancient Russian city. White stone towers, powerful walls and domes of churches are perfectly blended into the surrounding landscape. History of the Rostov Kremlin

The construction of fortifications near Lake Nero began when Finno-Ugric tribes lived on its shores. In the X-XI centuries these lands were settled by the Slavs who came from the northwest. The center of their settlement was located where the Assumption Cathedral stands today.

Inside the temple

One of the most picturesque buildings of the Rostov Kremlin is considered to be the gate church of St. John the Theologian (1683). It is elongated upwards, has elongated drums and small chapels, and these features give the structure grace and lightness. On the walls and vaults of the temple also preserved frescoes of the late XVII century.

The summer church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Hodegetria” was built in the Moscow Baroque style popular at that time. This happened in 1693, when the diocese was ruled by the successor of Metropolitan Jonah Sysoevich – Ioasaph.

In memory of the ancient Grigoryev Monastery, which existed on the territory of the Rostov Kremlin in the Middle Ages, a separate church of Gregory the Theologian was built. Inside the five-domed church is decorated with frescoes made in the late 19th century by an artel of artists under the direction of N. M. Safonov.

In the eight halls of the Samuilov building of the Rostov Kremlin there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to Old Russian art. Ancient icons and valuable liturgical utensils, skillfully made embroideries, metalwork and fine wooden carvings are exhibited here.

Those who look into the Church of the Hodegetria find themselves in the midst of real riches! The collection kept in this church is called “Shining Gold and Azure”. There is a place for unique icons, sculptures and a large collection of ancient church utensils. And in the White Chamber recreated the exposition of the old museum of church antiquities, which worked in the Kremlin in the late XIX – early XX century.

The history of Rostov land is presented in two museums at once. One of them introduces archaeological and paleontological finds, and visitors can see the remains of fossil animals and tools used by primitive people. The second floor of the Red Chamber displays exhibits related to the history of the city from the 7th to the 15th centuries.

In the halls of the museum you can see beautiful products created by skillful hands of local craftsmen, and in the store at the museum – to buy your favorite crafts made of finifti.

  • Museums located in the Rostov Kremlin receive visitors daily from 10.00 to 17.00. They do not work only on January 1.
  • To view museum collections, expositions and exhibitions, they sell separate tickets, as well as a single discount ticket, which gives the right to visit all museums.

How to get there

From the city bus station and railway station to the walls of the Rostov Kremlin is usually reached on foot. It takes 15-20 minutes (1.5 km) to get there. If desired, this distance can be traveled by cab.
