Republic Square (Armenian Հանրապետության հրապարակ)

Republic Square is the central square of Yerevan. During the Soviet regime, the square was named after Lenin. The main events in the life of the citizens take place in the Republic Square. In the daytime the square is the center of business activity: every now and then you meet people in strict suits and expensive cars. In the evening, in the light of the lanterns this place is transformed, becomes cozy and attractive.

.

History

The construction of the square was conceived by the chief architect of the city Alexander Tamanyan in 1924 and was finalized until 1958. Initially, the square was conceived as an oval, but later, due to the peculiarities of the adjacent territory, the shape of the square decided to change to a combination of oval and trapezoid.

Architecture

The shape of the square is formed by 5 buildings:

.
  • The National History Museum of Armenia,
  • Government of Armenia (the building’s tower houses the country’s main clock with bells),
  • Central building of the Post Office of the Republic of Armenia,
  • .
  • Marriott Armenia Hotel,
  • .
  • Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Energy.

All the buildings in Republic Square are made of tufa and their lower part of basalt. The facades of the buildings are clad in white and pink colored felsite tuff.

.

Republic Square is decorated with 2750 small fountains installed in 1968 on a small street adjacent to the square. In the year of installation they symbolized the age of Yerevan, and now, in the evenings, they are illuminated with different colors, further decorating the city. In addition, the central oval part of the square is made in the form of a huge mosaic painting. The next, but not the last decoration is the city chimes, which are installed on the Government House.
