Name

The Queen’s Staircase got its name in honor of Queen Victoria. The staircase consists of 65 steps, which symbolically coincide with the length of Queen Victoria’s reign.

.

History

The Queen’s Staircase is the link between Fort Fincastle and Princess Margaret Hospital. This Nassau landmark appeared in the city as early as the late eighteenth century.

Carving steps in rock is not easy, so the staircase was built using the labor of 500 slaves who worked on the staircase for 16 years, but never finished it. Slavery was abolished in 1834, and in the years that followed, no one dared to continue the hellish labor.

Tourists

Virtually any tourist who finds himself in Nassau is bound to visit this staircase. The mountain in which the stairs are carved is located in the heart of the city of Nassau. From the top of the mountain, there is a magnificent view that is mesmerizing in its beauty. From here, tourists can admire the beautiful beaches, amazing architecture of the city of Nassau and its surroundings, beautiful buildings and islands of green plants, and, of course, the inimitable ocean. The amazingly harmonious combination of nature and architecture of the city leaves an unforgettable impression.

Then you can walk down the steps along the wall of the fort, near which a small waterfall flows, and at the bottom there are usually tables set up and refreshments sold. As with other places on New Providence Island, there are usually locals hanging around who, for a small tip, are willing to be guides and tell you where the stairs came from, and their versions are not always consistent.
