Palace in Orchha (Raj Mahal)
Raj Mahal, or as it is often called Palace at Orchha, is one of the main attractions of the city. It was built in 1591 by Maharaja Madhukar Shah.
.General information
The palace at Orchhi, a defensive fortification with steep staircases and steep access roads is a prime example of medieval Islamic architecture. There is a small archaeological museum on the first floor, and behind the palace are camel stalls overlooking a green landscape adorned with monuments. The caretaker of the palace will open the painted rooms with Rama, Krishna and the rulers of Orchha hunting, fighting, flying and dancing on the walls and ceilings.
.The palace consists of two parts – the maharaja’s quarters and the women’s half. Each half of the palace has its own rectangular courtyard. Elevated balconies and intersecting passageways are symmetrically arranged in tiers on all four sides of the courtyard, they are crowned by turrets and pavilions with domes.
.
Downstairs is the smaller Raj Praveen Mahal, a pavilion and Mughal garden, and the Khana Hammam (Turkish bath) with beautiful vaulted ceilings.
