Okhotny Ryad shopping center

Okhotny Ryad is an underground shopping center named after the street, which, in turn, owes its name to one of the shopping rows that were located there. Okhotny Ryad was occupied by sellers of game – birds and animals, which were brought here by hunters from the surrounding settlements.

.

General information

Interestingly, the word “hunter” came into use only in the seventeenth century. Before that, the fishing people were called trappers. The origin is attributed to the fact that these people were engaged in the extraction of animals and birds with hunting, that is, desire and joy.

.

The first inhabitants in these places appeared as early as the XV century. The main class, at first, were merchants and artisans who sold their goods right at the gates of their yards. The trade area developed, and in time they began to build rows for specific goods. Hence the names – Okhotny, Kharchevoy, Loskutny, Obzhorny.

.

The Okhotny Ryad itself was located on the site of the built Historical Museum. The fire of 1812 destroyed the wooden rows, and instead of them already built stone premises. By this time the entire trading area of the Zaneglininskii Torg was named as Okhotny Ryad.

.

In the period from the second half of the XIX century to the beginning of the XX century Okhotny Ryad became the largest food market in the capital – a symbol of hospitality, satiety and Moscow abundance.

.

On Okhotny Ryad there were two famous for all of Moscow taverns. One belonged to Egorov and was famous for pancakes and rastegay, the other – Testov, which served a piglet with porridge, botvinyu with sturgeon and variously stuffed kulebyaka.

.

In the 20s of the last century, significant changes begin on the street. Traders from Okhotny Ryad gradually began to be transferred to Tsvetnoy Boulevard, where in time the Central Market of the capital was formed.

.

The first church to be demolished during the Bolshevik rule in Moscow was a chapel in honor of Alexander Nevsky, built at the beginning of the last quarter of the XIX century. Then the old church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, considered the patroness of trade in Russia, was demolished.

.

After the construction of the building of the Moscow Hotel and the Sovnarkom, Okhotnoryadskaya Square turned into a small street, which was called Okhotny Ryad.

.

In addition to the above-mentioned buildings, the street houses the Column Hall of the House of Unions. In 1961, Okhotny Ryad became part of Karl Marx Avenue. Only years later, in 1990, the street was returned to its former name.

.

In 1997, the underground shopping center “Okhotny Ryad” opened its doors to visitors for the first time. The characteristic dome became a distinctive feature of the Shopping Center. It is the “clock of the world”, on the outer vault of which a map of the Northern Hemisphere is depicted.

.

At first, Okhotny Ryad seemed like a real luxury. Today it stands in line with a huge number of similar Moscow shopping centers with clothes mostly for the middle class. However, around the turn of the millennium, the Okhotny Ryad shopping center was a real revelation. First of all, clothes here were almost cheaper than at the Cherkizovsky market, which was the main shopping destination for the poor during the perestroika era. Secondly, the clothes were of much higher quality and pleasant to the touch. Thirdly, it was warm, bright and clean. Here are brands like ZARA, TopShop, NEW YORKER, Bershka, MEXX, Mango, River Island, Colin’s, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius, Levi’s, Terranova, Sasch, Calvin Klein, OGGI, TATUUM, Motivi, Promod, Ecko, GANT, LACOSTE.
