The Norwegian Sea is a marginal sea in the Arctic Ocean, between the Scandinavian Peninsula, Iceland and Jan Mayen Island.

General information

The Norwegian Sea has an area of 1.4 million km², a depth of up to 3970 km (average depths are 1600-1750 m), tidal range of up to 3.3 m, and salinity of about 35 ‰. The warm Norwegian Current (continuation of the Gulf Stream) is of great importance in the life of the Norwegian Sea; due to the presence of this current, the Norwegian Sea does not freeze in winter. Off the Norwegian coasts the depths are shallow, shoals are characteristic (Lofoten Banks, etc.).

Fishing (cod, herring, etc.) and oil production are developed.

The most important ports are Norwegian Trondheim, Tromsø and Narvik.

The largest islands are Sørøya, Seilann, Arnøya, Ringvassøya, Kvaløya, Senja, Vesterloten, Lofoten Islands, Dønna, Vega, Frøya, Hitra and Smøla off the Norwegian coast.
