Nikolskie Ryady
Nikolskie Ryady in St. Petersburg is a multifunctional complex located in the historical district of Kolomna. Here in an unchanged form preserved row buildings of the late XVIII – early XIX century. Such architectural monuments include the two-story building of the Nikolsky Market, opened in 1789, which became a platform for the arrangement of a new public space. “Nikolsky rows” occupy a block bounded by Sadovaya Street, the embankment of the Kryukov Canal, Shchepyany and Nikolsky lanes. The building itself stretches along the streets and closes, forming a spacious courtyard, which can be accessed through three picturesque arches.
.History of Nikolskie Ryadov
The market was built in the style of classical shopping rows, where each shop is a separate room with a separate entrance, but all of them are united by a gallery around the perimeter of the building. Historians still argue who the author of the project: according to one version, it is G. H. Paulsen, according to another – an unknown architect who took as a basis for his work drawings of the famous G. Quarenghi, in whose arsenal there are several projects of shopping rows.
