New York Public Library
New York Public Library is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. It houses a rich collection of books that are peculiar “milestones” in the history of the development of various branches of human knowledge. These books had a great impact on the course of events, both for good and evil; books that most fully reflected the ever-changing world; and, finally, books that won the hearts of millions of readers. And also on this list are the books from which children learned to read and adults learned to find common ground with each other.
.General Information
The New York Library was built in 1911 by the architects of the firm of Sager & Hastings, who chose the Art Nouveau style for the building. The library’s holdings include 9 million volumes. On the stairs in front of the library entrance there are two marble lions symbolizing Perseverance and Patience. Locals and tourists like to take a break on the steps, because street musicians and artists often organize performances on the sidewalk below. It turns out to be a kind of street theater. The interiors of the library are well shown in the disaster movie “The Day After Tomorrow”. It is within its walls that New Yorkers are saved from a sharp cold snap by burning books in an ancient fireplace.
