National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art occupies two huge buildings at once, housing an astounding collection of works (over 100,000 exhibits) from the Middle Ages to the present day. The neoclassical west wing is dedicated to 19th-century European art, with a superb collection of Italian Renaissance works (including the only da Vinci on the continent); the geometric-style east wing, designed by Bei Yuimin (IM Pei), houses contemporary art including Picasso, Matisse, Pollock and a large moving sculpture by Calder at the top of the lobby. The two buildings are connected by an underpass.
