History of the Moscow Musical Theater

The founders of the Moscow Musical Theater are:

.
  • M. Е. Shvydkoy – State Prize winner, Minister of Culture, art historian and holder of a large number of other titles;
    • M. E. Shvydkoy – State Prize winner, Minister of Culture, art historian and holder of many other titles
    • D. Я. Smelyansky – Honored Art Worker, one of the most famous theater producers in the country.

    It was these people who in May 2011 established Russia’s first and only non-state theater of musicals.

    .

    The troupe is housed in the S. P. Gorbunov Palace of Culture, which was built in 1938 by architect Ya. A. Kornfeld. It was scheduled to open at the end of 2011, but renovations lasted several months longer – until February 2012.

    .

    The program to be seen by the first audience was called “Times Do Not Choose”. Its libretto was written by A. Kortnev and M. Shvydkiy and told about life in the 30s and 50s of the XX century.

    .

    The musical cost 150 million rubles and more than 2 years of hard work. But as a result – due to delayed repairs – the opening of the theater was marked by compositions by singer and musician M. L. Leonidov. The Soviet and American songs of the musical “Times Don’t Choose” were still applauded by the guests, but a few days later.

    The Gorbunov Palace of Culture became the location of the theater until 2017. It was for this period that a lease agreement was concluded with the owners of the building. The performances were staged on a multi-level transformer stage in a 1,250-seat auditorium.

    .

    During the 5 years of being in the Palace of Culture, the repertoire of the theater was constantly expanding, replenished with new charismatic productions. The musical “All About Cinderella” and the rock opera “Crime and Punishment” became real hits. Some of the most significant events include the following:

    • The 7 Fingers circus team show;
    • the 17th TEFI award ceremony;
    • a concert for the 110th anniversary of Vasily Solovyov-Sedogo.

    In 2013, 12 months after the institution opened, the theater became known as the Moscow Theater by order of the capital’s government.

    .

    While the creators of MTM were developing the program of performances in the Palace of Culture, and the audience gave the artists a well-deserved ovation, the main building on Pushkin Square was being renovated. In 2017 it was completed and the troupe moved to a new location.

    .

    The concert season in the former movie theater building opened with the musical “Circus Princess” prepared by The 7 Fingers circus team. The audience watched the show in a remodeled auditorium, 40% of which was taken up by a stage with a complex stage structure.
