Monument to Sergey Yesenin in Moscow

The Monument to Esenin in Moscow is one of the most expressive monuments to the poet, located in the center of the capital, on Tverskoy Boulevard. The bronze monument was unveiled in 1995, when the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Alexandrovich Esenin was celebrated. The figure of the poet is mounted on a round column, which rises above a staircase-like stone base. On the monument, Yesenin stands in a relaxed pose with his jacket open and his shirt collar unbuttoned.

General information

Tverskaya Boulevard was chosen for the monument because in 1919-1921 in the house number 37 on Tverskaya Street, not far from here, there was a literary cafe “Stoylo Pegasus”. It was extremely popular with Imagist poetry lovers. Poets Sergei Yesenin and Nikolai Klyuev, dancer Isadora Duncan and director Alexander Tairov visited it.

The author of the monument to Esenin in Moscow is sculptor Anatoly Andreevich Bichugov. In addition to him, architect Anatoly Vasilyevich Klimochkin and designer G. Silokhin worked on the monument. The monument is surrounded by neat flowerbeds, on one of which one can notice a small figure of the winged horse Pegasus.

Sergey Yesenin is one of the most famous Russian poets. Every year on his birthday – October 3 – many people come to Tverskaya Boulevard with flowers. Traditionally, poetry fans gather here, and Esenin’s poems are heard.

The first monument to Esenin

In addition to the monument on Tverskoy Boulevard, there is another monument to the poet in Moscow. It was unveiled much earlier, in 1972, on the birch alley of Yesenin Boulevard. The author of the first monument to Esenin is a famous sculptor and teacher Vladimir Efimovich Tsigal, who was assisted by architects S. Vakhtangov and Y. Yurov. It is not difficult to get to this monument on foot from the metro station “Kuzminki”.

The monument to Esenin in Moscow is located on Tverskoy Boulevard, near house number 19, 0.5 km from the exits of metro stations “Pushkinskaya” and “Tverskaya”. Buses No. 15 and A stop near the monument.
