Millesgården Museum

Millesgården is a public art museum and sculpture park in Sweden created by Swedish sculptors, husband and wife Olga and Carl Milles. Millesgården consists of several sections. The artists’ house with workshops and collections of works, among them one of Sweden’s outstanding antique collections, is the heart of the museum. This is where Carl and Olga Milles lived from 1910s to 1920s

General information

The park overlooking Wertan Bay features many Carl Milles sculptures, several fountains, and a flowering garden. The Exhibition Hall houses contemporary art exhibits and also houses a museum boutique. Nearby is the Anna House, whose interior decoration was done by Estrid Eriksson and Josef Frank. The former gardener’s house houses the Rose Terrace Bistro, and nearby stands the Rose House, where art classes are held.

.

Millesgården is a meeting place of opposites; here old and new meet, cultural traditions mix, and the boundaries between “inside” and “outside” often do not exist.

.

The contours of the sculptures standing on high plinths stand out clearly against the sky and the vast panorama. Many of them are born out of ancient mythology and other narratives. One could say that Millesgården is filled with fairy tales and myths.

.

A walk through Millesgården evokes impressions of a different nature in the visitor. Many of Milles’ sculptures are on display in the park. By making author’s copies of commissioned works, Carl Milles was able to exhibit most of his works in Millesgården. The architecture lover will find buildings typical of each of the decades of the 20th century, as well as fragments of earlier architecture – mainly columns and plinths that harmonize with the overall picture. Finally, the naturalist will appreciate the different character of the terraced gardens.

.

The first buildings of Millesgården originated on the site of today’s Upper Terrace. The old gates, previously used by visitors, are also located here. Today our guests enter through the Exhibition Hall and leave through the Lower Terrace, which was built in the 1950s.

History

Carl Milles systematically built Millesgården during the first half of the 20th century. In 1906, he purchased a plot of land on Herserud Rock with the intention of building a house with an atelier for himself and his wife, the artist Olga Milles. Over the years, his plans changed. Traveling abroad, Milles was inspired by the places he visited. French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s Atelier Maison de la Médonne, where Milles was a guest, became a major source of inspiration. The artist also used motifs from Italian architecture and, later, American architecture. The sculptor’s brother, Evert Milles, was an architect and directed the works at Millesgården from the mid-10s. Gradually neighboring plots of land were acquired and the stony landscape was terraced. Carl Milles installed sculptures and columns on the terraces, while leaving the pine and birch trees that grew there untouched. New buildings, fountains, walls and staircases were built. At the time of the artist’s death in 1955, work was underway on the Lower Terrace. The last, in 1999, was the Exhibition Hall.

In 1936, Carl and Olga Milles donated Millesgården to the Swedish people. Since then, the museum has been run by a foundation called Lidingö-home of Carl and Olga Milles.
