Mejit Atoll

Mejit Atoll is the most secluded coral island and is considered the smallest of all the Marshall Islands. Its size is only 1.86 km². In the local dialect, its name sounds completely unpronounceable – Mrjej. Medjit Atoll is located east of the main line of the Rataka chain, about 85 km northeast of Vauthier Atoll.

General Information

The island is densely vegetated with lush thickets. It is home to coconut palms, breadfruit trees and pandanus in large numbers. It is also worth noting that only here there is a small lake with fresh water, which is a rarity in these parts.

Mejit is one of the few without a protective lagoon, so fishing and unloading boats here can be quite risky, especially in November and December when the winds are strong.

California Beach on the northwest side of the island is a great place to swim and snorkel, and the waters around the island are generally recognized as some of the best fishing in the world. What makes Medjit stand out from the Marshall Islands is the complete absence of poisonous fish species in the waters, which is rare in the region. The island is also known for its pandanus leaf mats, which are woven by island women, and for the quality of its schools, both mainstream (which is very relevant to the islands) and dive schools.
