Malaita Island
Malaita is a volcanic island in the Solomon Islands archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean 80 km south of Santa Isabel Island and 50 km east of Guadalcanal Island. The island is 163 km long and 37 km wide. Malaita has a humid tropical climate and is prone to earthquakes and cyclones. The surface is cut by many rivers, as well as canyons and ravines. In some places there are waterfalls, lakes and mangrove swamps. Today the island is home to about 140,000 people.
