General Information

The London Arch is about 20 million years old. It has been subjected to constant exposure to the waves of the Indian Ocean, gradually taking the form of a two-span bridge. As the similarity to the famous London Bridge was obvious, this stone formation was given the same name.

.

On January 15, 1990, the span closer to shore collapsed. Two hikers who were on the far side of the “bridge” at that moment were trapped. Fortunately, they were soon rescued by helicopter and no one was injured. After the collapse, the “London Bridge” became the “London Arch.”

A pleasant surprise for tourists will be the many local penguins that can be seen along the coast.
