General Information

Connected to the Baffin Sea by the Nares Strait, which consists of a whole system of straits, including the Robson, Kennedy, and Smith channels.

.

The sea was named by polar explorer Adolphus Washington Greeley, during his 1881-1884 expedition. The name Lincoln is not associated with U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, but with his son, U.S. Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln.

.

The shores of the sea are rocky, heavily dissected by fjords into which glaciers descend. Depths vary from 100 to 500 meters. Currents are mainly eastward. The sea is closed, tides are semidiurnal, and the magnitude of water movement is about 0.8 meters. Most of the sea is covered throughout the year by perennial drift ice, which is up to 15 meters thick.
