Laptev Sea

The Laptev Sea is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is located between the Taimyr Peninsula and the Severnaya Zemlya Islands in the west and the Novosibirsk Islands in the east.

General Information

The area of the Laptev Sea is 662,000 km². Depths up to 50 m prevail, the greatest depth is 3385 m. The major bays are: Khatanga, Olenyoksky, Buor-Khaya. There are many islands in the western part of the sea. In the south-western part of the sea there are islands of Komsomolskaya Pravda. The following rivers flow into the sea: Khatanga, Anabar, Olenyok, Lena, Yana. Most of the year the sea is covered with ice. The main port is Tiksi.

The sea is named in honor of D. Y. and H. P. Laptev (originally the sea was named Nordenschelde).
