Lantau Island
Lantau Island is located 2 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong Island and has important historical significance. It was the stronghold and de facto capital of the Song dynasty in the 10th and 13th centuries, became an important religious center during the Ming period, and became the western defense outpost of Hong Kong during the British rule. The island is home to a statue of the Big Buddha, which attracts tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. Lantau Island is also notable for being the site of Hong Kong’s Chek La Kok International Airport.
