Lamanai

Lamanai – the ruins of once one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Maya civilization, located in what is now Belize. The city is located on the shores of a 48-kilometer lagoon in north-central Belize.

.

History

The name Lamanai means “drowned crocodile” in the Mayan language. The city has a history of three thousand years, that’s how long people lived here without interruption. During the classical period of the Mayan civilization (about 250 years – 900 AD), the population of the city reached 20,000 inhabitants. In contrast to other Maya cities, Lamanai was still inhabited when Belize was invaded by the Spanish in the 16th century.
