On the 458-square-kilometer island, relict forests are juxtaposed with swamps, grasslands and savannahs. Therefore, the reserve is home to a wide variety of fauna. The sitatunga, a fearful antelope with elongated and widely spaced hooves, is the only one found here. Also in Rubondo you can see hippos, crocodiles, green monkeys, pythons, chimpanzees, elephants, mongooses, giraffes, porcupines and other exotic animals.

.

Bird lovers will also get a lot of pleasure from visiting the national park. Here live kingfishers, paradise flycatchers, cormorants, ibis, storks, goliath herons and so on. The fauna of the island is no less attractive. There are about 40 species of orchids growing on its territory.

Threats of Victoria

Outwardly, the shores and water surface of the lake seem like an earthly paradise, but they conceal a lot of dangers. Swimming in the reservoir in any case is not allowed: first, it is teeming with crocodiles, and secondly, the water is infected with schistosomiasis.

Also on the islands live tsetse fly, from the bite of which a person can be infected with sleeping sickness. Other dangerous insects are present, carrying malaria and yellow fever.

The islands are also home to the tsetse fly.

Specific climatic conditions, which combine high humidity and heat, not every traveler will endure. Another thing to keep in mind is that the lake often experiences very strong storms.

Environmental concerns

The ecological situation in the lake water area is getting worse every year. The reasons for this are deforestation, population growth, development of the fishing industry, draining of sewage and technical water and so on.

.

In addition, the environment is negatively affected by the artificial grafting of exotic plants and animals. For example, in the waters of Victoria grew lilies, brought to Africa in the last century. These plants, which are incredibly resilient, consume a large amount of oxygen, which has a bad effect on the number of fish. They also block tributaries, making navigation difficult.

.

Lake Victoria is a unique African body of water, impressive not only for its size, but also for its pristine beauty and diversity of natural resources. Here you can admire stunning landscapes, observe animals, go fishing and photo-hunting, as well as get in touch with the traditions of the natives. The key is to plan your trip carefully and take care of your safety.
