Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre, located in South Australia, is considered the oldest lake on the planet. But tourists are eager to see the reservoir not only for this reason. The lake is very “capricious”, does not have a constant size and depth. In the dry season, it is covered with salt crust, the crystals of which glisten in the sun. Around the reservoir – clay and sands, causing associations with a fantastic movie.

A magnet for travelers

The main reason tourists come here is to see the whitewashed landscape of the parched lake. The most interesting view is from the shore of Halligan Bay. There are several ways to see the surrounding area – drive an off-road vehicle or fly over in a helicopter. But the highway closes once the reservoir fills with water.

Fun tourists!

Walking to Lake Eyre by land is almost extreme and requires thorough preparation, so tourists turn to experienced guides to accompany them. They take with them a decent supply of food and water. But some are not afraid of dangers – in the dry season they organize extreme races. The surface is hard and flat. In 1964, even set a world record here – sportsman Donald Campbell accelerated the car to 648.73 km / h.

A magnificent view opens up on the Eyre from the air. Local travel agencies offer the use of this mode of transportation. The traveler is taken to the object and given the opportunity to admire it from above. At the same time, one can see the neighboring dry reservoirs, which are also eye-catching.

‘Navigating the Sky’

Quite interestingly, the dried up salt marsh has a… yacht club. “No, we are not joking – it is quite serious” – under such a motto the organization works. Even regattas are held here during the period of high water. Tourists ride on boats and kayaks. You just have to wait for precipitation to use water transportation. At the same time you can look at the atmospheric phenomenon with your own eyes: the water level rises and the surface of the reservoir seems flat. Reflected in the lake, the sky merges with its surface – you can’t distinguish where the horizon line is. That’s why the locals say: during a water walk it seems that you glide on the sky.

Additional impressions

‘ class=”fancybox” >Even in the dry season, there is still some water left in the Eyre, which usually collects in small pools formed on the salty, dried lake bed.

When planning your travel itinerary, it’s worth stopping by the famous village of Oudnadatta or visiting the Simpson Desert along the way. The quicksilver dunes are located to the north of the reservoir. To the east are plains and sharp rocks, so the going is difficult. To the south are salt lakes and dry salt marshes.

The main population center near Lake Eyre is William Creek, surrounded by sand dunes. Very close by is a huge cattle farm. During the dry season, grazing becomes a challenge. The town itself is small – a dozen people. There are motels and a campground. There’s even a pub. Nearby is the Kalamuina Shelter, which used to offer rentals to people who wanted to farm. Today it is the National Park ranger’s lodge.
