The Labrador Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean, between the Labrador Peninsula, the island of Newfoundland, and Greenland.

General information

The Labrador Sea probably formed about 40 million years ago. One of the world’s largest turbidite channels runs north-south through the middle of the sea.

In the south, the sea border runs along the line Cape Farwell – Cape St. Charles. The area is 841 thousand km², the average depth is 1898 m, the greatest 4316 m. Water temperature from -1 °С in winter to 5-6 °С in summer. Salinity is 31-34.9 ‰. In winter it is two-thirds covered with ice.

Tides are semi-diurnal, up to 4 m. The cold Labrador Current comes out of the sea to the south.

The main spawning area for cod, haddock, hake and herring.

Main ports: Ivigtut (Greenland), Holton Harbor (Canada).
