Jesuit Mission Jesús de Tavarangué

Jesuit Mission Jesús de Tavarangué is a mission center of the Jesuit monastic order in Paraguay, a historical monument inscribed in 1993, together with the Jesuit Mission of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

.

The mission was established in 1678 by the Catholic Jesuit envoy Geronimo Delfin, and was located near the Mondeia River. It was destroyed many times by Brazilian hunters “bandeirantes” in pursuit of serfs. It is separated from Encarnación by a path of 38 kilometers. According to historical records, the mission had 200 inhabitants in 1750, but degenerated in 1768 as the Jesuits were kicked out of Latin America.
