Saint Kitts Island
Saint Kitts Island is part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. Together with the smaller island of Nevis, it forms the state of St. Kitts and Nevis. The island has an area of 261 km². The capital is Basseterre, one of the first cities of the West Indies, founded in 1627. The island’s mountainous slopes are cut by numerous rivers that irrigate almost the entire territory except for the southeastern tip. Dense tropical forests grow in central St. Kitts, the mountain tops are covered with grasslands, and the lowlands are home to sugar cane plantations and orchards.
