House-Museum of I. I. Levitan

The I. I. Levitan House-Museum is located in the town of Plyos, in the Ivanovo region. The museum, dedicated to the great landscape painter, is part of the Plyos State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. For the first time Isaak Ilyich Levitan visited here in the spring of 1888 together with his friends – artists Sofia Kuvshinnikova and Alexei Stepanov. The museum includes two exposition halls. The first one is devoted to the artist’s creative biography, and the second one contains his original works, as well as paintings by Shishkin, Polenov, Savrasov and other artists. In the same hall you can see Levitan’s portrait of Kuvshinnikova. The mezzanine recreates the everyday life of a merchant’s house of the second half of the XIX century, there is a memorial room where the artist lived. Plyos is inextricably linked with the name of I.I. Levitan – it was this small town that inspired him to create such recognized masterpieces as “Silent Abode”, “After the Rain. Plyos”, “Evening. Golden Pleth”, “Birch Grove.”
