El Hierro
The island of Hierro is located in the west of the Canary Islands. In the past it seemed to Europeans to be the end of the world, and geographers used it as the prime meridian before it was moved to Greenwich near London. The main occupations of the locals are fishing, raising sheep and goats, growing pineapples and grapes. Tourism is limited to the main town of Valverde and neighboring Tamaduste, with an area of solidified lava. The area of El Golfo, a 25-kilometer-long crescent-shaped depression on the north shore, is surrounded by steep cliffs. The rest of the island is occupied by spectacular slopes descending from the summit of Malpaso. They form spurs of bizarre shapes.
