Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower in New York City is an impressive building of the new World Trade Center, erected on the site of the complex that was destroyed on September 11, 2001. The site is both a new business environment for the city and a memorial to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

Highlights

The official name of the structure is World Trade Center 1. The building is located in New York City, in an area called lower Manhattan. It is located in the northwest part of the site where the infamous Twin Towers used to be. Together with the 9/11 Memorial, the skyscraper takes center stage in the new composition.

.

The smooth spiral outlines of the building seem to continue the movement of the Statue of Liberty’s arm, symbolizing the resilience and strength of the American spirit. The tower became the tallest building in the Earth’s Western Hemisphere, and the 4th tallest in the world, towering at 541 meters. With 124 of that being made up by the grandiose spire. In total, the skyscraper has 104 above ground and 5 underground floors. Most of the premises are intended for offices, but the project provides cafes, restaurants and even a viewing platform at the top of the building. And on the first floor there is a picturesque hall with a ceiling height of 24 meters.

.

A bit of history

The competition for the best project for this area was announced back in 2002. It was won by Daniel Libeskind. However, the plan was repeatedly revised, so it was recognized as finally ready for implementation only in 2006.

.

Construction work began on April 27, 2006, and the bulk of it was completed in 2014. The cost of the project amounted to about 4 billion US dollars. Today, the Freedom Tower is open to tenants and visitors. The reinforced concrete building was erected taking into account the maximum safety requirements. But thanks to the large amount of glazing, it does not look heavy or sullen.

.

Interesting facts

The total height of the skyscraper (along with the spire) is 541 meters or 1,776 feet. It was in 1776 that the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence, a crucial document in the formation of the modern nation.

.

The interior of the building is very similar to the arrangement of rooms in the former “twins”. Some consider it just using a successful engineering model, and some see it as a tribute to memory.

.

The Tower has already housed offices of major international companies, and a 48-page advertising and information brochure is available to potential tenants.

.

Thanks to panoramic glazing and some other techniques, the energy consumption of the building was reduced by 20%. This was proof that significant resource savings are possible even in very large buildings.
