Fort Boyard

Fort Boyard (Fort Boyard) is a stone fortress located on the shoal of the Antioch Strait near the coast of France in the Atlantic Ocean. The structure is located between the islands of Oleron and Ile d’Aix. For more than 20 years, a TV program of the same name has been filmed on the territory of the fort, which became famous all over the world. The fortification is named after the shoal on which it is built.

.

The fortification is 68 meters long, 31 meters wide, and over 20 meters high. The number of the planned garrison was 250 men. Fort Boyard is one of the few military buildings in the region that has never been used for its intended purpose.

While installing heavy stone blocks on the seabed, craftsmen encountered that the stone quickly sank into the sand under its own weight. High costs and doubts about the success of the project forced the authorities to shut down construction in 1809. It was resumed only 28 years later, during the reign of Louis-Philippe I, who was once again in conflict with England.
