El Golea

El Golea is a Saharan oasis located in Algeria, on the road from Algiers through Laguat to Tuat and Timbuktu, at an altitude of about 400 meters. There are almost two hundred thousand palm trees growing in El Golea.

The population of the oasis is more than fifteen thousand. El Golea consists of a fortified upper town and a lower town with stone buildings and excavated caves. There is an airport. The flight from the capital Algiers to El Golea takes 2 hours and 47 minutes.

History

El Golea was originally settled by the Berber tribe of Zenata. Later, the Arabic-speaking Shamba tribe settled here. The oasis was first visited by Duveirier, and from 1861 it was considered French. In 1872, it was officially placed under French jurisdiction. El Golea was under it until the independence of Algeria in 1962. By the way, the explorer of Africa Charles de Foucault is buried on the territory of the oasis.
