Dolmens of Gelendzhik

Dolmens of Gelendzhik are ancient stone structures, which are classified by archaeologists as the oldest tombs of the Bronze Age. Dolmens are stone structures resembling small houses with a small round entrance, sometimes tables. In Breton language “dolmen” means “stone table”. They are usually made of slabs and stand alone, but may use rocks as one of the walls or floor. There were more than 7,000 dolmens in the Caucasus, but about 150 remain, with many of them concentrated just in the Gelendzhik area. Travelers staying in the city or its vicinity can visit about 20 dolmens without much time and physical effort. Such an excursion leaves a strong impression, because the mystery of the origin of the dolmens still does not give rest to scientists, archaeologists and tourists.
