Hand in the Atacama Desert
Hand of the Desert (Mano del desierto) is a monumental sculpture that is located in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The creator of this creation of art is sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. The 11-meter-high reinforced concrete structure represents the left palm of a man, about three quarters of the way out of the ground. The sculpture was officially unveiled to the public on March 28, 1992.

The Hand of the Desert is located 75 kilometers south of the city of Antofagasta near the Pan-American Highway. It is quite difficult to get lost here, as the massive structure can be seen from afar – it is on the right side of the road.

Getting here is easiest with a group of tourists, hitchhiking or renting a car. It is highly recommended not to cover the huge distance on foot. The Atacama Desert is characterized by one of the most arid and hot climates in the world. If you decide to travel here, do not forget to take care of your provisions in advance. After leaving the settlement, you will not have the opportunity to buy the necessary goods. It is mandatory to take enough water and food. Sun protection means are important – headgear, umbrella, cream with UV filter.
