Derzhavin Museum-Estate
Derzhavin’s museum-estate was opened in 2003, by the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, in a restored mansion where the elder contemporary and predecessor of Pushkin lived for almost a quarter of a century. Since the early 1790s and up to Derzhavin’s death, the poet’s house was one of the main cultural centers of St. Petersburg, the center of the spiritual life of the capital. The artistic, literary and political elite of the country gathered here, visited by Fonvizin, Olenin, Karamzin, Krylov, Zhukovsky and others. Since 1811 in a large double-light hall of the house hosted meetings of the famous “Conversation of lovers of the Russian word”, which discussed the development of the Russian language and literature.

General information
At the moment the Derzhavin Museum is a reconstructed urban estate of the XVIII century, consisting of a complex of buildings, the center of which is the house of the poet. In the sixteen interior halls of the museum you can see furniture, paintings, graphics of Derzhavin’s times, books, magazines, manuscripts of writers of that era, as well as rarities unique to the “temple-shaped house” of the poet, which he helped to create by the famous Russian architect N.A. Lvov. For example, in the front parlor one can see a reconstruction of straw wallpaper from floor to ceiling decorated with marvelous embroidered roses. This is a copy of the wallpaper made by the poet’s wife, a great craftswoman.
.
The most amazing place in the mansion is the small sofa living room, all the furniture in which consisted of one cozy sofa under a white canopy. It is said that in noble houses such sofas existed specifically so that you can, isolated from everyone, secret with friends.
.
Well, the most important room of the house is, of course, the restored study of the poet.
.
All the furniture in it was created by the invention” Derzhavin himself: cabinets-delusions, which can not be distinguished from the entrance door, a table with “lifting naloy”, a sofa with secret drawers on the sides, in the drawers of which were stored “projects on the affairs of the service” and “poetry.”
In the East Building of the museum-estate recently opened a new literary exposition “Owners of the Russian lyre. From GR. In addition, you can visit the permanent exhibitions “In the white gloss of porcelain” (porcelain products of the end of the XVIII-XXX centuries), “Pushkin in the memory of generations” (works by artists of the XX century), “All-Russian Museum of A.S. Pushkin. Pages of History”. There are temporary exhibitions, literary and musical evenings, scientific meetings, concerts and poetry readings.
