Дагестан

The Republic of Dagestan is the southernmost region of Russia and the largest among the seven subjects of the North Caucasus Federal District. The territory of Dagestan stretches from the coast of the Caspian Sea to the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus, and no other region of the country can compare to this republic in the diversity of landscapes. Dagestan’s stunning landscapes are woven of deep canyons and fantastic cliffs, barchans and semi-deserts, lakes and waterfalls, mountain massifs and sandy sea beaches. Every year these lands are visited by more and more tourists – lovers of ethnographic travel, extreme athletes, responding to the call of the mountains, young people and couples with children, who just want to relax on the coast of the Caspian Sea.

Highlights

Dagestan is Russia’s most cosmopolitan region and the country’s champion in terms of linguistic diversity. “Caucasian Babylon” is inhabited by more than 60 nationalities, and the locals speak almost 30 languages. There are also many dialects, and sometimes Dagestanis living in neighboring villages simply do not understand each other. The Russian language comes to the rescue, which is spoken by the vast majority of citizens. Dagestanis are incredibly hospitable and cordial. They are not intrusive, but they are always ready to help if they assume that a person needs it.
