La Conciergerie Castle and Prison
La Conciergerie is a former chateau of the French kings and a prison located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, on the western tip of the Cité Island, next to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris. The Conciergerie is part of the Palais de Justice complex, which still houses municipal services, the court, and the prosecutor’s office. This structure is perfect for filming movies about the Middle Ages. The Conciergerie has a grim reputation. During the French Revolution, hundreds of prisoners were thrown here and subsequently executed. Marie Antoinette was imprisoned here for 76 days before her execution, Emile Zola was tried here, and the spy Mata Hari was sentenced to execution.
