Citadelle Laferrière

Citadelle Laferrière is the largest fortress in the western hemisphere, which was built as the residence of the king, and to protect the kingdom from possible invasion by the French. The fortress is located in the northern part of the island of Haiti, on top of a mountain, 27 kilometers from the town of Cap-Haïtien. The Citadelle Laferrière so impressed the UNESCO representatives that, together with the dilapidated palace of Sans Souci, it was included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
