History of the neighborhood
The area belonging to the settlement today was inhabited by the ancestors of the Adygo-Abkhazian peoples back in the Stone Age. In the I century of our chronology on the place of modern Chemitokvadje a Byzantine fortress was formed, which existed for several hundred years and fell into disrepair in the VI century. Later the territory of the fortification was occupied by two clan settlements: Chemitokvadje, which literally translated should have meant “aul of the Chermit family” and Dzibakhabl – “aul of the Dziba family.”
.After the end of the Caucasian War, the inhabitants of the auls were forcibly evicted to the territory of the Ottoman Empire and the place was empty for several years. Subsequently, the land found a new owner in the person of Professor Botkin, thanks to whom Chemitokvadje was quickly filled with immigrants from Russia, Armenia, and Greece.
The October Revolution brought its own changes in the life of the village. In the 30s on the territory of Botkin’s estate built a rest house of the Air Force Academy, which later became the sanatorium of the Air Force “Chemitokvadzhe.”
