Castello Sforzesco

Castello Sforza is a grandiose castle in Milan, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. – Residence of the Visconti and Sforza, which also served as a fortress from the 15th century.

General information

Interestingly, the appearance of the Sforza Castle was modeled by Milanese architects who worked on the Moscow Kremlin. The central tower of the Milanese fortress (“Filarete Tower”) was designed by Antonio Filarete, who at one time worked with Aristotle Fioravanti.

Today there is a sculpture museum, an art gallery and an archaeological collection. Among the most valuable exhibits are the equestrian statue of Bernabo Visconti by Bonino da Campione (14th century, first floor) and the frieze with reliefs for the Porta Romana gate created in 1161 by Anselmo da Campione. The ceiling of the Sala delle Asse is painted like the crown of a tree by Leonardo da Vinci, and in the Sala degli Scarlioni stands the Pista Rondanini, Michelangelo’s last unfinished work (1564).
