Borovoe (Burabai)

Borovoye (since 2005 – Burabai) is a resort village in Kazakhstan, occupying the territory of the pine-forested isthmus separating lakes Borovoye and Bolshoye Chebachee. The second alternative name of the resort is “Kazakhstan’s Switzerland”, assigned to it because of the similarity of the relief with alpine landscapes and a special microclimate, which is almost the same as in the homeland of Wilhelm Tell. People go to Borovoye to appreciate the health programs of the village sanatoriums, to conquer the slopes of Mount Kokshetau, and simply to abstract themselves from the steppe landscapes, trading them for the shores of the purest lakes of meteoric origin.

History of Borovoye

Borovoye neighborhoods began to be settled in the XIX century, when Russian Cossacks came here. The guests liked the natural lands of the lake region, which prompted them to decide to settle here and build first the Koturkulskaya village and then the Shchuchye settlement (today the town of Shchuchinsk). The settlement itself owes its origin to Cossack Zubov, who put a mill on the nearby lake channel. The private enterprise quickly gained momentum, so in a few years around the mill grew a whole village.

By the middle of the XIX century to drink koumiss in Borovoye traveled not only from the surrounding area, but also from Russia, and in terms of infrastructure, the resort continued to be a wild and abandoned place. Vacationers huddled either in Cossack huts or in wooden pavilions without facilities. The remoteness from the railway line served as an anti-advertisement for the village, so Borovoye started to become really popular only in the early XX century, when on the initiative of local official V. V. Baryshentsev several roads were laid through the resort area (the northern side of Lake Borovoye, the eastern side of Mount Sinyukha). The construction of the first sanatorium, where clients were treated mainly with air baths combined with koumiss “cocktails”, dates back to the same period. In 2005, the resort was renamed from Borovoy to Burabai.

Beach vacation and fishing

Fishermen’s note: whatever you’re going to catch in Borovoye’s lakes, buy a license. Usually they are sold at the ecopost of the village or at the forestry office near the Museum of Nature.

If you want, you can take a ride to the lake Maloe Chebachie. This is the deepest of Borovoy’s reservoirs, but because of the gentle slopes, sandy coves, as well as slowly increasing depth, it is very popular with families with children. There are always vacationers on Maly Chebachiy, but their number is incomparable with the crowd, which in high season is typical for the beaches of Burabay. Among the fish on Maliy Chebachiy one can catch pikeperch, redfin, carp, carp, carp, carp, carp, gouster and bream. Fishing is done mainly by fishing rod – due to low water transparency underwater hunting in these places is not particularly lucrative.

Treatment in Borovoe

In the XIX century in Borovoye practiced kumysol treatment and air baths, so regular clients of local hospitals were patients with tuberculosis. The healing mountain air, soaked with the aroma of pine needles, alleviated suffering and prolonged the life of the terminally ill, so the village quickly gained a reputation as an ideal resort for lung patients. Today Borovoye has expanded its own profile. Diseases of respiratory organs, cardiovascular, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems, urological and gynecological problems, chronic fatigue syndrome – Burabay health resorts undertake to cure most of the ailments known to medicine.

.

The most advertised among the local sanatoriums – “Okzhetpes”, “Green Bor”, “Shchuchinsky”, as well as the Children’s Health Center “Continent”. Exterior appearance and interiors of health resorts often give away the era of the Soviets, which can not be said about the prices. A day’s stay in Borovoy sanatoriums with meals and treatment included costs at least 17,500-20,400 KZT (3000-3500 RUB). There are also more modern health centers with tiny room stock, but their rates are usually even higher.

As for popular restorative techniques, Burabay continues to practice kumyso, water and mud treatment, to which more modern procedures like salt mines, oxygen cocktails, and phytobochkas are added. By the way, about healing muds: they are extracted in the lake Maibalyk, which belongs to the Burabai tract. Mud substance is saturated with hydrogen sulfide and is widely used in aesthetic medicine, so if there is a desire to tighten the skin a little, but do not want to buy a trip to a sanatorium, you can go to the lake on your own (careful, there are contraindications to use!).

.

Local cuisine

Most of the Borovoi national cuisine, but if you want Russian soup or Italian pasta, it will not be difficult to find them. The easiest way to organize meals is to check into one of the sanatoriums, where guests are fed no less than five times a day.

.

Travelers who came to the resort to rest wild, local cafes lined up along the highway Shchuchinsk – Borovoye, as well as placed in the village and the vicinity of the nearest lakes. Sometimes in Burabai taverns you can get a takeaway portion, so do not hesitate to clarify the information with the waiters and the administrator of the establishment. Restaurants at resort hotels (“Inzhu”, “Eden”, “Zhumbaktas”) also allow all comers. The average bill for two people is 10,000 KZT (1,700 RUB). In lower-ranked cafes you can eat for around 5,000 KZT (850 RUB). If you want to relax with some light music and a glass of something stronger than koumiss, resort bars and pubs such as Lafayette, Bochka and others will come to the rescue.

.

Where to stay

In Borovoye you can choose from several housing options. The most comfortable – hotels, hotel complexes and sanatoriums, located both in the village and closer to the natural locations of the resort. Here you will be offered a sauna, a table in a restaurant, and an entertainment program. The price is 11,670 – 26,250 KZT (2000-4500 RUB) per day of stay. There is a “five” hotel in Burabay – Rixos Borovoe, where the cost of the most modest room starts from 40 825 KZT (7000 RUB). By the way, the hotel has an official casino CashVille – recently Burabai has been declared an open gambling zone.

Cheaper options are gesthouses and campgrounds. The latter are of two types: summer, with houses without facilities, and year-round, renting apartments, complete with Wi-Fi and other civilization benefits. If you want to try on the role of an unperturbed ascetic, rent a room from the locals. Do not count on special comfort, but it will cost much cheaper than a hotel room. And the winner in the nomination “extreme economy” – your own tent, set up on the edge of the forest or the shore of the lake.

How to get there

‘ Moscow and Burabay is more than 2500 km, but motorists are not embarrassed by this, so the paths to the resort can be considered knurled. Leaving Pervoprestolna by your own car, keep to the Vladimir direction (highway M7), then go through Dzerzhinsk and Cheboksary to Kazan. Then we exit to the highway R-240, crossing Ufa and Beloretsk. In the area of Troitsk we solve customs issues (point Kaerak) and further on along the highways M-36, R-11 – to Kokshetau. At the city interchange we turn to the highway A-1 and go straight to Shchuchinsk, from which a section of highway R-223 leads to Borovoye. Travel time is a day and a half.

.

In the capital you can take a train on the route Moscow – Karaganda and get off in Shchuchinsk, from which to Borovoye – 15-20 minutes by cab. Travel time is about two days. An alternative to cabs is the shuttle buses that run between Shchuchinsk and Burabai daily from 7:00 to 19:00, with an interval of 40 minutes.

.

There are no regular flights to Kokshetau (the nearest airport to Borovoi) from Moscow, so you have to fly to Nur-Sultan (Astana). And there we get to the capital’s railway station, from where daily trains run in the direction of the resort. Travel time is up to 4 hours. A faster option – buses Nur-Sulutan – Kokshetau. They run several times a day and make a stop in Shchuchinsk.
