Blue Lagoon in Jamaica

Blue Lagoon is located 10 kilometers east of Port Antonio. And while Jamaica will offer you a great variety of beaches, Blue Lagoon is the one to stop at. Many people are familiar with the place (as well as the name) from the movie of the same name starring Brooke Shields, which was very popular in the 1980s.

.

General Information

Blue Lagoon is an uncorrupted oasis spoiled by civilization, where you feel like you’re the last person on Earth. Here, the magnificent blue and emerald green waters reach an astounding depth of 56 meters. Created by underground mineral springs in the Blue Mountains, the waters of this lagoon are considered one of the last true tropical paradises on the island. The picturesque bay is surrounded by high green hills, and their backdrop accentuates the dream-like landscape.

.

No special entertainment is provided for tourists in the Blue Lagoon. If you want, you can rent a boat or raft and ride along the shore, looking at the villas built around (some of them are rented out to tourists). In the same way you can get to Monkey Island, where you can snorkel. As such, there is no beach in the Blue Lagoon, the nearest one is located 10 minutes away by car. One more disadvantage: the lagoon is so small that when tourist boats arrive, it becomes crowded, and traders and boatmen are very annoying. On the other hand, if you manage to get here during the calm hours, it’s easy to feel like you’re on a deserted island.

.

Swimming in the Blue Lagoon, at times you can feel the current, and sometimes it is warm, and sometimes – cold. There are places where it is so shallow that you can walk on the water, and there are underwater chasms with steep cliffs, in third places the bottom gradually goes down. You can even see how the mineral water gurgles.

.

There is a restaurant nearby and a dive store where you can rent boats, scuba gear and masks.

.

Relatively unknown to most tourists, the Blue Lagoon is nevertheless high on the list of “must-see places” both in Jamaica and around the world.

.

How to get there

From Kingston or Ocho Rios, Blue Lagoon can be reached by car in less than 2 hours. From Montego Bay, it takes about 3.5 hours to get there. A boat ride on the lagoon will cost about 3000 JMD. Most tours leave from Port Antonio, while all-day tours leave from Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. The closest place to the lagoon that you can get here by boat is San San Beach, which is about 1.5 kilometers to the east.
