Bled Castle
Bled Castle is an ancient castle in Slovenia on top of a 130-meter cliff at Lake Bled. Its observation deck offers stunning views of the Alps and the surrounding countryside.
.History
The first mention of Bled Castle dates back to 1004, when Emperor Henry II gave it to Albuin, Bishop of Brixen, for his use. At that time, the castle was known by its German name “Feldes.”
>During the Middle Ages, new buildings appeared on the cliff, and defensive stone walls with towers appeared at the very top of the cliff.
.After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the town of Bled became part of Yugoslavia and Bled Castle became the summer residence of first the monarchs of the House of Karadjordjevic and then Josip Broz Tito. During World War II the castle temporarily housed the headquarters of the German troops.
In 1947, the castle suffered a fire, but after a few years it was restored and turned into a historical museum. The museum’s collection includes clothing, weapons and household items.
What to see
The entrance to the castle is decorated with a lift bridge and a Gothic-style arch. Inside the castle is a museum of the history of the place.
All the castle buildings are arranged around two courtyards above each other, connected by a staircase: the lower courtyard is surrounded by outbuildings, and the upper courtyard above it by living quarters. Bled Castle has a chapel with rich Baroque frescoes from the 16th century.
.
The oldest part of the castle is the Romanesque tower, which was used for housing, defense and surveillance of the surrounding countryside.
