Schwarzwald (Black Forest)
Schwarzwald is an upland hilly area with interspersed deep forests, crystal clear lakes, fields and villages, and the bluish mountain range of the Alps to the south. The Black Forest is one of the most attractive places in the country.
.General information
Almost every village in the Black Forest has the status of a “Luftkurort” (“air resort”) – it has a travel agency, a restaurant, a beer garden, walking trails, a swimming pool, health groups, in some places a ski jump and ski elevators. It is one of Germany’s most popular vacation and skiing destinations. There are guest rooms in good peasant houses decorated with flowers on the windowsills.
.
The Black Forest region is traditionally associated with folklore, cuckoo clocks, and virgin forests lined with fairy-tale houses with peaked roofs – one of the most popular tourist centers in rural Germany. The northern region, crisscrossed by wide wooded mountain ranges, forested hills and small picturesque lakes such as Mummelsee and Wildsee, is known for resorts, spas and spas – from Baden-Baden to Bad Wilbad. A trip to this area would certainly be incomplete if you didn’t take a dip in the warm waters!
.The central Black Forest is home to the Simonswald, Eltz and Glotter valleys, as well as Triberg and Fürtwangen, famous for its clockmaking workshops and museums. The area around the Triberg waterfall, the highest in Germany, is known for traditional pom-pom hats, thatched-roof houses and a mountain railroad. The Schwarzwaldbahn (Black Forest railroad), which runs through Triberg, is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.
.
The south also offers beautiful mountain scenery, including the Feldberg, the highest mountain in the Black Forest at -1493 meters. Two large glacial lakes, Titisee and Schlücksee, are also located here. Freiburg, a romantic university town with vineyards where grapes are harvested for dry wines and a marvelous Gothic cathedral with perfect spires, is also located in the Black Forest.
