Banda Sea

The Banda Sea is an inter-island sea between the islands of the Malay Archipelago in the Western Pacific Ocean. It is bounded by the islands of Sula, Buru, Seram, the outer arc of the islands of Kai, Tanimbar, Timor, Tukangbesi, and the southeastern tip of Sulawesi Island.

Area 714 thousand km², average depth 2737 m, max. 7440 м. Surface temperature from 25.6 (July-August) to 28.9 °С (November). Surface salinity from 33.1 to 34.6 ‰. Deep water (with a temperature of 3-3.25 °C and salinity of 34.6-34.63 ‰) comes from the Pacific Ocean.

The Banda Sea consists of 6 basins more than 4000 m deep, separated by underwater rapids and ridges. Coral islands along the crests of the ridges. An area of active volcanism.
