Balearic Sea

The Balearic Sea is a marginal sea in southern Europe off the eastern shores of the Iberian Peninsula, separated from the main Mediterranean Sea by the Balearic Islands.

Area 86 thousand km², average depth 767 m, maximum 2132 m. Average surface water temperature from 12 °C in February to 25 °C or more in August. Salinity is 36-38 ‰, at depth more.

The bottom is lined with sands and silts. Rivers from the Iberian Peninsula: Ebro, Turia, Hicar, etc., flow in. Intensive shipping, fishery is developed.

The largest ports are Valencia, Barcelona, Palma. Numerous resorts on the islands and the coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
