Highlights

The unusual cylindrical building of the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is located in a seaside park on the shores of the Caspian Sea. From the windows of the museum halls, facing east, one can see the moorings of the Baku Yacht Club and the expanse of the sea.

.

About 3,000 carpets woven in different regions of the country are presented in the halls. Precious cloths are carefully laid on gentle, slightly concave beds. All products are provided with explications with detailed descriptions in three languages (Az, Ru, En). The guides joke that only Aladdin’s fabulous flying carpet is missing from the world’s richest collection.

.

Of great value to art historians and researchers are sketches of carpet compositions and sketches of individual patterns drawn on paper by eminent masters. Antique sketches on yellowed sheets are presented on the museum stands.

Each historical carpet has its own name – Hila-Buta, Hanlyg, Malybeyli, etc., because their appearance is unique, no two identical products have never been created by artisans-weavers. Preservation of the exhibits is ensured by the restoration center, where advanced methods of fabric preservation are applied. These technologies were transferred to Baku colleagues by the specialists of the restoration workshops of the Queen Victoria and Prince Albert Museum in London.

.

Specialists of the museum’s IT department actively communicate with users of social networks, systematically engaged in digitization of treasures stored in the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. More than 10,000 exhibits are now available for viewing in the world virtual space.
