Ascension David’s Desert

Ascension David’s Hermitage is located in the village of Novy Byt, on the bank of the Lopasni River, 85 km from Moscow and 24 km from Serpukhov, near the town of Chekhov. The monastery was founded on May 31, 1515 by the Monk David, hegumen of the Ascension, the wonderworker of Serpukhov, who came to this place with the icon of the Sign of the Mother of God with 2 monks and 2 novices. Having settled here, he put cells, erected the first wooden churches in honor of the Ascension of the Lord God and Jesus Christ with a side chapel in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker with a refectory. Near the monastery David planted a linden grove. Today David’s Desert is perfectly restored and receives guests on weekdays from 7:30, on weekends – from 6:00, closes after the end of the evening service.
