Amundsen Sea

The Amundsen Sea is an ice-covered marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Antarctica. It is located approximately between 100° and 123° W near Mary Baird Land, bounded by Thurston Island to the east and Cape Dart to the west. It borders the Ross and Bellingshausen Seas. Depth up to 585 m. Ice shelves and continental glaciers are widespread in the coastal zone. The average annual water temperature is below 0°C. Salinity is about 33.5‰ (in summer). The current is directed to the West. It is covered by floating ice all year round. The Amundsen Sea is home to the Ross seal, Weddell seal, sea leopard, whales, penguins and albatrosses. It is named in honor of R. Amundsen.
