Schloss Ambras

Ambras is the largest castle in Tyrol. The castle was built by Archduke Ferdinand (1529-1595) for his wife, Philippine Welser. His wife rewarded him with exquisite meals. She described her recipes in a cookbook, which is still very popular in Austria today. The Armory (Riistungssale), located in the lower part of the Ambras Castle, is a magnificent exhibition of medieval weapons and armor.

.

A highlight of the upper castle is the Renaissance Spanish Hall (Spanischer Saal) with wooden ceilings, frescoes depicting Tyrolean nobility and a huge gallery of Habsburg family portraits. Schlossstrasse, 20.
