Alifu Atoll

Alifu Atoll (Haa Alifu) is located in the southern part of the Maldives, 400 km from the capital Male. Alifu is formed by 16 islands of varying sizes (the most populated among them is Dhidhodhoo). With its appearance, the atoll resembles a pear.

General information

Alifu has the status of a national reserve. The local waters are home to manta rays, various sharks, octopuses and fluorescent jellyfish. The waters near the atoll are traditional fishing grounds. And the coastal area, surrounded by coral reefs, has a convenient bay and is popular with yachting enthusiasts. There is only one negative moment for diving enthusiasts – live corals can be seen only at a depth of more than 30 meters, as the warm current has destroyed everything above.

.

In the Alifu Islands you can see flying foxes, which lead a daytime lifestyle. They resemble bats, only larger. They are very unusual animals.

There is an ancient mausoleum with a sacred tomb on Matirah Island, to which Sufi Muslims still make pilgrimages, and the island itself has been awarded the honorary title of “Noble.”

Tourists

In August 2005, the first resort in the area, Island Hideaway, opened on Donakuli Island. Now there are only three hotels built here (however, they are very, very “upscale”). So the underwater world is waiting for its discoverers, and the atoll is waiting for its guests.

.

The most popular souvenirs are woven from reeds red mats “Tundu Kunaa”. This is a completely unique product, which is made only here. You can buy them either directly from the manufacturer or in souvenir shops.
