Alexander Column on Palace Square
Alexander Column is an Empire-style monument located on Palace Square in St. Petersburg. It is the tallest column in the world, made of solid stone. The Alexander Column was erected in 1834 by architect Auguste Montferrand by decree of Emperor Nicholas I to commemorate the victory of his older brother Alexander I over Napoleon. There is also an opinion that the name of the column is also linked to the Pharos (Alexandria) Lighthouse, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, representing the ultimate level of humanity’s achievements.
